Role of Middle TN first responders in creation of '9-1-1: Nashville'

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — After months of anticipation, the new series "9-1-1: Nashville" is premiering Thursday night on WKRN, showcasing the heroic adventures of first responders in Music City, with some help from real emergency personnel around Middle Tennessee.

Kimberly Williams-Paisley, who plays dispatcher Cammie Raleigh in the new show, got the chance to put on a headset to listen to calls and radio traffic so she could learn about a day in the life of a Metro Nashville 911 dispatcher firsthand.

The Nashville Department of Emergency Communications said its personnel also brought Brad Paisley's wife up to speed with dispatch humor, wit, and grit, even though she didn't need much coaching.

According to Williams-Paisley, preparing for the role gave her a new level of respect for the real people behind the calls.

"We've got an amazing Metro Nashville 911 dispatch, so I'm just honored to be a part of this whole thing," Williams-Paisley told Stephanie Langston and Laura Schweizer from "Local On 2" at the red carpet premiere for the new series. "I think people are really going to love the show."

If you watch "9-1-1: Nashville," you should also keep an eye out for a couple familiar faces from News 2 — namely chief meteorologist Danielle Breezy and anchor Bob Mueller — as well as a Montgomery County AEMT named Mason Rivers.

As a full-time first responder with Montgomery County EMS and U.S. Army reservist, Rivers has been spending his limited free time on set as one of the show's firefighters. This local AEMT said he hopes his presence on TV will bring his community closer together.

"When they yell at me to go get a stretcher or get the LIFEPAK or carry a patient, grab the firehose, I'm comfortable doing all that, and so it's an interesting dynamic because I don't have to pretend," Rivers explained. "I don't have to step into a role doing that. It's what comes naturally, and it's bringing my experience to the screen, which I think is an awesome thing."

Officials have described the newest entry in the “9-1-1” franchise as a high-octane procedure about heroic first responders and their family saga of power and glamour. The series will star Chris O’Donnell, Jessica Capshaw, Williams-Paisley, LeAnn Rimes, Hailey Kilgore, Michael Provost, Juani Feliz, and Hunter McVey.

Multiple cast members expressed their admiration for real first responders during their red carpet interviews, including the ones who are on the "9-1-1: Nashville" set.

"It's an honor to play one and represent firefighters because I have the utmost respect for first responders," O'Donnell, who portrays the 113 firehouse's leader, Capt. Don Hart, said.

"They're the bravest people I've ever met and some of the nicest, as well, so it's a pleasure to be around the first responders on a daily basis, and anything that we can do to bring support and help to them, I'd love to," said McVey, who plays Blue Bennings, a stripper turned firefighter who is revealed by the captain to be the brother of fellow firefighter Ryan Hart — portrayed by Provost — in the trailer.

Filming, which will take place through early 2026, is expected to generate over $50 million in economic impact for local businesses and labor, creating more than 600 jobs, according to the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development.

The series will share some iconic locations in Nashville — including the Korean War Veterans Memorial Bridge and Ascend Amphitheater with country star Kane Brown — as well as surrounding Tennessee communities, with national and international audiences. The Visit Knoxville Film Office even told News 2's sister station, WATE, that "9-1-1: Nashville" will film an episode in Knoxville.

The show premieres at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 9 on WKRN and other ABC stations, and it will be available the next day on Hulu. According to the episode description for the pilot, "Firefighters embark on a dangerous rescue mission when a tornado touches ground in Nashville, Tenn., and endangers crowds at a music festival."
