NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — The legacy of one of the most influential artists in country music history will live on in Nashville.
A statue of George Jones unveiled Tuesday morning at the historic Ryman Auditorium in downtown Nashville. His wife, Nancy Jones, was on hand to witness the unveiling.
Jones performed on the Ryman stage throughout his life. He was invited to join the Grand Ole Opry in 1956, which contributed to the Opry`s rise as a cornerstone of country music.
You can see Jones' statue on the Ryman Icon Walk standing alongside other legends such as Little Jimmy Dickens, Bill Monroe, Loretta Lynn and Charley Pride.
Each statue was sculpted by artist Ben Watts and takes approximately one year to complete.
According to a release, the statue unveiling coincides with celebrations surrounding the Grand Ole Opry’s 100th anniversary, marking Jones’ enduring place in its history and in the heart of Nashville.
