MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WKRN) — The Murfreesboro Police Department announced Sunday that vehicular homicide charges were brought against the driver in a deadly crash that killed a pedestrian in early August.
Tuesday, Aug. 5, the area of Old Fort Parkway and New Salem Highway was closed for several hours as authorities investigated the crash.
A preliminary investigation revealed 23-year-old Kali Mills of Murfreesboro was crossing Old Fort Parkway in a marked and signaled crosswalk. MPD said a pickup truck -- driven by 18-year-old Samuel Helton of Murfreesboro -- made a left turn from Golf Lane and struck Mills.
Mills was transported to an area hospital where medical staff pronounced her deceased.
A warrant was issued for Helton's arrest, and he was taken into custody Saturday, Aug. 23. He was charged with vehicular homicide by recklessness and booked into the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center. He has since been released after posting a $50,000 bond.
