Nashville police arrest teen accused of pointing gun at leasing office staff

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — An 18-year-old is facing multiple felony charges after he allegedly pulled out a gun and pointed it at staff members at an apartment complex.

According to an arrest affidavit, the incident took place on Monday, Aug. 4. Police said a woman called authorities to report that a man had pulled out a gun and pointed it at staff.

When officers arrived at the complex, witnesses told them that the teen—identified as 18-year-old Lamonte Garrett— and his child's mother were in one of the rooms of the leasing office while their one-year-old child, who was reportedly outside the room, was crying for approximately 30 minutes.

Staff members said when they asked if the pair could assist the child, Garrett became agitated and began to argue with one of the staff members.

Witnesses told police that the argument continued outside, where some pushing occurred between a staff member and the 18-year-old. At some point, Garrett reportedly reached into a backpack, pulled out a pistol and pointed it at the staff member.

Staff members added that Garrett was carelessly waving around the pistol and the barrel of the weapon pointed in their direction. The 18-year-old took off shortly after police were called, according to an arrest report.

Police added the child's mother was still at the scene when officers arrived and refused to provide Garrett's name, describing him as a friend. Since she didn't live at the complex and was only visiting a family member, staff wanted her trespassed from the property.

When officers followed the child's mother to conduct a "standby" as she grabbed her things, they found Garrett standing outside of an apartment. He allegedly told law enforcement that he feared for his life, which is why he grabbed the gun and pointed it at the staff member.

Even though there was no video of the altercation, police said Garrett was taken into custody due to three witnesses stating that the weapon was pointed at the staff member before being recklessly aimed at others.

Booking records show Garrett was charged with three felony counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The 18-year-old is being held in Metro Jail on a $20,000 bond. No additional information was released.
