My Day 5K honors life of teen killed in 2023 camper fire

COLUMBIA, Tenn. (WKRN) — This weekend, the My Day 5K and 1-mile trot returns to the Maury County Fair, and this year will honor the life of a local teen who died in a fire.

Will Spiess, 19, died in a camper fire at the Natchez Trace Campground in Lewis County in 2023. He was in the 11th grade at Columbia Central High School. The teen, who had special abilities, was often found in the hall greeting students and teachers with his bright smile, according to friends who spoke with News 2 following his death.

My Day 5K organizers said Will believed everyone deserved a friend and never met a stranger.

Funds raised from the race will benefit King's Daughters' School, the Maury County Special Olympics, and Best Buddies of Tennessee.

This year's My Day event is an expansion of previous events. The races are part of the expanded mission of My Day.
