NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Thanksgiving is so much more than turkey and ham. In fact, the sides are the star of the show for some gathered around the table.

With Turkey Day quickly approaching, Campbell's released its State of the Sides report, which offers a detailed look of popular side dishes and trends across America.

Tennesseans should plan on making plenty of stuffing/dressing this year as it was ranked as the state's favorite side dish, according to the report.

The side dish isn't only a favorite in Tennessee. In fact, data shows that stuffing/dressing rules as the national favorite, up second place in 2023, but 33% of people still prefer to tweak to the recipe and make it their own.

Meanwhile, five states — California, Iowa, Utah, West Virginia and Wyoming— chose mashed potatoes as the best Thanksgiving side dish.

According to Campbell's, these are 2024's top "Thanksgiving Hits":

  1. Stuffing/Dressing
  2. Mashed Potatoes
  3. Sweet Potatoes
  4. Green Bean Casserole
  5. Mac & Cheese

The report also examined which flavors, ingredients and trends each region prefer to add to their Thanksgiving feasts. Campbell's said those living in the Southeast, approximately 22%, tend to incorporate at least seven or more side dishes, boasting more than the national average.

In conclusion, the report found that 56% of American would prefer eating side dishes over turkey this year, adding that 38% say they would be happy to fill their plate with just side dishes, and 60% say they enjoy cooking the sides more than cooking the main bird.
