Music City Center to study need for expansion

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) -- Music City Center, a 2.1-million-square-foot convention and event facility in the heart of downtown Nashville, is considering expanding.

"We're turning away so much business that we can't accommodate right now and we've got shows that are frankly outgrowing us," said Music City Center President and CEO Charles Starks.

On Thursday, Sept. 5, the Convention Center Authority approved a $75,000 bid to complete a feasibility study on the need for expansion.

Starks said they want to stay competitive, retain business, and say yes to new opportunities they know are coming as the city continues to grow.

According to Starks, an expansion could mean adding more levels to the center or buying surrounding land and building out. He said they'd also consider adding a campus within walking distance of the Music City Center.

"It's a long journey, but the first phase is you've got to be able to say and show people that indeed we have lost enough business, there is enough demand that it warrants further expanding the building," said Starks.

The feasibility study will be complete in about a year and is funded through the Convention Center Authority's operating budget.
