Man admits to breaking into neighbor's apartment in Putnam County, deputies say

PUTNAM COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — Deputies in Putnam County have arrested a man who admitted to breaking into his next door neighbor's apartment.

The Putnam County Sheriff's Office said deputies began investigating the incident on Thursday, Aug. 29, after a woman reported someone had broken into her apartment located in the 1700 block of South Jefferson Avenue.

According to officials, the woman entered through the front door of her unit, heard the back door slam, and then a loud noise come front her back porch.

She reportedly told investigators that she looked around and inspected her apartment, but no items were missing. However, she said it appeared that someone had rummaged through a drawer in the dresser.

During the investigation, detectives observed that the victim's apartment directly joined the neighboring one. While inspecting the back porch, detectives said they discovered that the porch is more than 10 feet off ground, meaning the only way to get into victim's apartment would be from the apartment next door.

The resident of the neighboring apartment — identified as Casey McCully — invited detectives into his apartment and allowed them to view his back porch area, authorities said. McCully later admitted to detectives that he "gained access to the woman's apartment from her back porch area and entered her residence."

McCully was charged with aggravated burglary. He remains jailed on $45,000 bond and is expected to appear in court on Oct. 7.

No additional information was released.
