'Tennessee Summitt': Former governor, investors make bid to bring WNBA team to Nashville
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A group of investors, including a former governor of Tennessee, has made a bid to bring a professional women's basketball team to the Volunteer State.
Former Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam and his wife are reportedly leading a group of investors in the bid to bring a Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) team to Nashville. The bid will be submitted on Thursday, Jan. 30.
If the bid is successful, the Tennessee franchise will reportedly begin playing in the summer of 2028 at Bridgestone Arena.
According to a release, the ownership group has proposed naming the team the "Tennessee Summitt" in honor of former University of Tennessee coach Patt Summitt, who coached the Lady Vols for 38 years and won the NCAA Championship eight times.
“As a fierce competitor, my mom was proud of the Lady Vols’ championships and success, but she was also a huge advocate for women’s sports and women in leadership,” said Tyler Summitt, co-founder of the Pat Summitt Leadership Group and Pat Summitt Foundation. “I know she would be proud and honored to be included in the expansion of women’s professional basketball into Tennessee."

In addition, the Haslams and ownership partners plan to construct and develop "a world-class practice facility for the Summitt." Officials said the future facility would also serve as a hub for youth basketball in the Nashville area. However, the location for the facility has yet to be determined.
“Nashville is a great sports city, and the state of Tennessee is no stranger to great women’s basketball,” said Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell. “The Haslams have stepped up to make a competitive bid for a WNBA franchise. A professional women’s sports team is the missing piece of Nashville’s landscape, and I’m thrilled with the possibility of adding to our great sports environment.”
Several celebrities and athletes have joined the expansion bid including Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Candace Parker and Peyton Manning.
The Tennessee Summitt has since created a Facebook and X page for "exclusive content and updates on the expansion bid process."

School bus drivers organize convoy to support Antioch
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — For the second time in two years, Metro Nashville Public Schools bus drivers were called upon to respond to a deadly shooting in Nashville.
On Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2025, school bus drivers responded to campus after the deadly shooting inside Antioch High School to ferry children to a reunification area, just as they did on March 27, 2023 after the shooting inside The Covenant School.
On Monday morning, at least 20 bus drivers showed their support for the children whose lives they protect every day by participating in a convoy to Antioch High School.

Bus driver Amanda Peters said this morning's convoy was to show they stand with Antioch, the students, teachers and faculty.
"We, the Antioch school bus drivers, want to make Antioch students know that we stand with you, we're behind you, and we're all going to be there for you. So we just wanted to let you know that our hearts are heavy for you but we're there for you."
Antioch students are expected to return to campus Tuesday. Bus drivers don't have specific changes in place for tomorrow as students return to school under new security measures.
On the morning of March 27, the Metro Transportation Department sent at least nine buses to The Covenant School to take students away from the shooting scene. Bus after bus took kids to a safe, calm place where they could be reunited with their loved ones.
Metro Nashville Public Schools reported its bus drivers have evacuated Nashvillians during floods, fires and the 2020 bombing downtown. At the height of the pandemic, the big yellow school buses delivered school supplies, academic materials and food directly into neighborhoods.

Warren County deputies seeking 'armed and dangerous' suspects following robbery
WARREN COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) -- Authorities issued a warning to the Warren County community Friday morning, urging the public to use extreme caution amid a search for robbery suspects who "are considered armed and dangerous."
The Warren County Sheriff's Office said deputies were dispatched around 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 23 to the intersection of Yager Road and Short Mountain Road after a male was robbed at gunpoint by two individuals.
When law enforcement arrived at the scene, they learned the victim was traveling in the area when he was reportedly stopped by a female standing in the road and flagging him down. According to officials, the female said her truck had broken down and asked if the victim could help her.
However, while the victim tried to assist the female, a male allegedly approached him from behind, put what the victim believed to be a gun into his back, and demanded his money. Authorities said the suspect -- who was wearing a hoodie covering his head and hiding part of his face -- reached into the victim's pockets and "forcibly retrieved" an unknown amount of cash.
After the robbery, law enforcement said the two suspects left the scene in a green, 1990s model Ford truck, which was described as "a single-cab, long-wheelbase vehicle with a white pinstripe and damage to the right rear quarter panel."
"The suspects are considered armed and dangerous. Authorities urge the public to exercise extreme caution and be aware of their surroundings," the sheriff's office said in a Facebook post on Friday, Jan. 24. "If you find yourself in a similar situation, law enforcement strongly advises that you contact the authorities immediately rather than trying to handle the situation personally."
If you have any information about Thursday evening's incident or the suspects' whereabouts, you're asked to call Investigator Spencer Prior at 931-473-7863.

Trump declares ‘Golden Age’ in America after inauguration
President Trump on Monday declared it was the beginning of a new “Golden Age" in America, pledging to restore a country that he said had been decimated by the previous administration as he officially took the oath of office for his second White House term.
In an inaugural address from the Capitol, Trump depicted a nation in disrepair and laid out an ambitious agenda that he argued was validated by his election victory in November.
The president, in taking a shot at his predecessor Joe Biden, who was also seated directly next to the lectern as he spoke, said he was inheriting a government that "cannot manage even a simple crisis at home, while at the same time stumbling into a continuing catalog of catastrophic events abroad."
"Our recent election is a mandate to completely and totally reverse a horrible betrayal, and all of these many betrayals that have taken place, and to give the people back their faith, their wealth, their democracy and, indeed, their freedom," Trump said. "From this moment on, America's decline is over."
Trump said he would address the "inflation crisis," which he blamed on overspending by the Biden administration. He vowed to declare a national emergency at the southern border and to impose tariffs on foreign goods.
He said he would end "weaponization" of the Justice system. He vowed the official policy of the government would be that there are "only two genders." And he cast himself as a "peacemaker," even as he signaled he would seek to reclaim ownership of the Panama Canal.
Trump delivered his address in the Capitol Rotunda after Monday’s inauguration proceedings were moved indoors in anticipation of bitterly cold temperatures in the nation’s capital. It was the first time an inauguration took place inside since 1985 for then-President Ronald Reagan’s second inaugural ceremony.
The change in plans meant fewer people could be in the room to witness Trump’s swearing in and remarks in person. Attendees who made it inside the Rotunda and were seated directly behind the lectern included Trump’s Cabinet nominees and senior officials, former presidents and vice presidents, GOP donors and tech industry leaders like Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos and Sundar Pichai.
Hundreds of other guests were relegated to an overflow room in the Capitol, including members of Congress, governors, New York City Mayor Eric Adams and influencer Logan Paul.
Thousands of Trump supporters who intended to watch from the National Mall witnessed the events via livestream at nearby Capital One Arena.
Trump’s 2017 inauguration speech was widely remembered for its references to “American carnage” and a pledge to put “America First,” a sharply different tone than the typical notes of optimism and unity that are hallmarks of inaugural addresses.
Monday’s address carried some of those same echoes as Trump promised to put America first and argued he'd been left with "plentiful" challenges.
But he was at times reflective, speaking about the rally last July where he was grazed by a bullet. And, as he did throughout the 2024 campaign, Trump argued the nation's success would ultimately unify its citizens.
"I return to the presidency confident and optimistic that we are at the start of a thrilling new era of national success," Trump said. "A tide of change is sweeping the country."

Trump chooses Penny Schwinn as US Deputy Secretary of Education
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — President-elect Donald Trump announced Penny Schwinn as his pick for U.S. Deputy Secretary of Education on Saturday.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump announced his reasonings for appointing Schwinn to the position.
The statement read in part,
Penny has a strong record of delivering results for children and families. She previously served as the Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Education and, at the Texas Education Agency, as the Deputy Commissioner of Standards and Engagement, Deputy Commissioner of Special Populations and Monitoring, and Chief Deputy Commissioner of Academics. She was also the Assistant Secretary of Education of Delaware, and holds a master’s degree from Johns Hopkins, as well as a Ph.D. from Claremont.
Donald Trump
A former teacher herself, Penny became the founding principal of a charter school, because she believes in the power of School Choice, and is committed to delivering the American Dream to the next Generation by returning Education BACK TO THE STATES.
Schwinn previously worked under Gov. Bill Lee as the Tennessee Commissioner of Education from 2019 to 2023. Her role included overseeing the department’s response to the coronavirus pandemic, implementing the governor’s controversial school voucher program and overhauling the state’s school funding formula. Gov. Bill Lee responded to the announcement in a statement on Facebook.
Donald J. Trump has made another strong choice to further his education agenda —delivering school choice & finally returning power back to the states.
Penny is a true conservative with a brilliant mind for education. Tennessee benefited from her service & now our country will.
Gov. Bill Lee
According to the Department of Education, the position of Deputy Secretary "focuses on the development and implementation of policies, programs, and activities relating to elementary and secondary education matters."

What happens on the first day of the Tennessee General Assembly?
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — The 114th Tennessee General Assembly gaveled in for the first days of the legislative session on Tuesday, but lawmakers won't get to discussing pieces of legislation just yet.
First, the 132 state lawmakers have to perform a series of procedural steps outlined in the state constitution and state law in order to officially convene.
According to the Tennessee Constitution, state lawmakers meet for 90 session days over the course of a two-year period for each general assembly. The 90 days are split evenly between the two years, meaning there are officially 45 session days each year.
According to Nashville Sen. Charlane Oliver, the first day of the session is something akin to the first day of school. "Everybody comes together at the Tennessee Capitol to officially start the new session," the state senator said in a constituent newsletter.
Lawmakers officially gaveled in at noon, and newly-elected lawmakers took their oaths of office. According to Oliver, newly-elected lawmakers take oaths to the U.S. and Tennessee constitutions during their swearing-in ceremonies.
According to Legislative Librarian Eddie Weeks, there are 12 new members of the general assembly: three state senators and nine state representatives.
Once the new lawmakers are sworn in and officially begin their tenure, each chamber of the legislature must elect new Speakers. The Speaker of the Senate also serves as the Lieutenant Governor of the state, according to Oliver.
After each chamber selects its new speakers, they will each vote on a set of rules. The rules will establish the parliamentary procedure for how the lawmakers will conduct business during the session. The state legislature follows Mason's Manual of Legislative Procedure for all parliamentary procedures, according to Oliver.
Mason's rules govern how lawmakers conduct official business, including how they introduce motions, cast votes, speak on the floor of each chamber, the conduct of each lawmaker, and the timing of filing bills and amendments of bills. Additionally, each chamber can add other limitations to its own rules if it receives a majority vote on them.
Once the first day's business is concluded, the lawmakers enter into an "organizational session," according to Oliver.
The state constitution dictates state lawmakers meet for "organizational purposes" to start the session. During this time, lawmakers cannot pass legislation on a third and final reading as is required by law. This organization time cannot last more than 15 consecutive calendar days, according to the constitution.
Some things on the agenda during the organizational session include a joint convention on Wednesday, Jan. 15, at 9:30 a.m. During this convention, all 132 lawmakers will meet in the House chambers to elect constitutional officers.
These officers include the secretary of state, comptroller of the treasury, and state treasurer. Oliver said this is merely a formality, as all the current officers are expected to be reelected.
The next item on the organizational agenda happens on Thursday, Jan. 16, according to Oliver. At this time, lawmakers will attend an ethics training program. All lawmakers receive training on compliance laws "to make sure no one does anything illegal or unethical."
Other official and unofficial things happen during this time, according to Oliver. Lawmakers will receive their committee assignments from their respective speakers and begin filing more bills prior to the legislative filing deadline, offices may be rearranged in the Cordell Hull State Office building, and new members will receive their parking spots and name plates.
After Jan. 16, the Senate will recess for one week, according to Oliver.
"Even if you don't care about politics, this is where decisions are made about things that affect all of us—schools, hospitals, roads, and even how much stuff costs," the senator said in her newsletter.

New England Patriots hire former Super Bowl champ Mike Vrabel as next coach
(AP) — The New England Patriots have hired Mike Vrabel as their next head coach.
The team announced the hiring Sunday morning. It comes a week after Patriots owner Robert Kraft fired Jerod Mayo after the team’s season finale victory over the Buffalo Bills to finish 4-13 in his lone season as coach.
Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich, former Houston Texans offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton and Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson also interviewed for the job.
But Vrabel, a fan favorite during eight seasons as a player in New England where he was a member of its first three Super Bowl winners and an inductee into the team’s Hall of Fame in 2023, was the preferred candidate because of his long association with the franchise and coaching success during his six seasons in Tennessee.
In hiring the 49-year-old Vrabel, Kraft is turning to another former Patriots defensive standout who, like Mayo, built a reputation as a coach for his ability to relate to players.
But Mayo, who served as assistant under former longtime Patriots coach Bill Belichick, was a first-time head coach and struggled to get results from a young roster led by rookie quarterback Drake Maye. In explaining Mayo’s dismissal Kraft said while he thought he’d identified the successor to Belichick, that in hindsight he now believes Mayo wasn’t quite ready to be an NFL head coach.

In Vrabel’s case, however, he arrives with a head coaching resume burnished by a 56-48 overall record in Tennessee from 2018 to 2023. That includes a 2-3 record in the playoffs and AFC championship game appearance in 2019 as part of a run of three straight postseason berths.
Vrabel served in a consultant role with Cleveland this season, but his contract expired, allowing him to speak with other teams. He also was interviewed by the New York Jets.
The lure of New England won out and now he will look to rebuild the franchise he’s been associated with most during his NFL career.

Kroger: Winter weather causing shipment delays to Middle TN stores
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — As Tennesseans prepare for a winter storm that is expected to bring a decent amount of snowfall, one grocery chain says weather conditions could impact shelves at the store.
On Wednesday, a spokesperson for Kroger told New 2 that deliveries from the chain's Louisville warehouse to Midstate stores have been delayed due to previous storms that impacted the Kentucky area.
According to Kroger, the delay could result in limited availability of items at Middle Tennessee stores, adding that customers may notice signs that read: "Due to winter storm impacts, some products may be limited in supply or out of stock."
"We are actively working to address these challenges by rerouting deliveries, coordinating with suppliers, and deploying additional resources to ensure our shelves are restocked as quickly as possible," said a Kroger spokesperson.
The grocery store chain added the safety of employees will remain the "top priority" as they work to navigate the weather-related disruptions and provide products that customers rely on.
