'They really need help': Local group gathers donations for East TN storm victims
ASHLAND CITY, Tenn. (WKRN) — A group of friends in Cheatham County have gotten together to collect donations for flood victims in East Tennessee.
After seeing the destruction carved out by Hurricane Helene, Chasity Shortt, Alisha Dozier, Torrie Thomas, Mason Nicholson and Dustin Nicholson were determined to help out their neighbors in need. The five of them came up with the idea of a donation drive.
“I'm from Gordonsville, Tennessee, so East Tennessee, even though it's a little bit further than where I'm from, it's always been on my heart,” Shortt said. “The devastation that they're going through right now is just unbelievable, and they really need help.”
On Sunday, they put their plan into action. They set up shop at Tractor Supply in Ashland City, located at 356 Frey Street, as a donation drop-off site. Their goal is to collect enough items to be distributed to Carter County on Wednesday.
“We have a 53-foot trailer here that we want to fill to the brim and send out,” Shortt said.
Dillon Transportation contributed the large trailer as well as a truck driver to deliver the goods collected to a port in East Tennessee.
Donations are also being accepted at 24 Realty in Pleasant View (2521 Hwy 49E). They will be at the two sites to collect items Monday and Tuesday from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.
“They've never experienced anything like this before,” Shortt said. “It's not like something that they have to deal with every year and are used to. They're still trying to find areas for people to go and everybody has just left their homes with just the clothes on their backs.”
The group has been constantly communicating with officials and residents in Elizabethton to see what they’re most in need of. They’ve compiled the requests and are asking their community to contribute the following items:
- Cases of bottled water
- Canned food
- Dog food
- Toiletries
- Personal hygiene items
- Laundry detergent
- Batteries
- Blankets
- New clothing with tags
- Diapers
- Wipes
- Gloves
Shortt said Tennessee is the Volunteer State for a reason, and now is the time to step up and give back.
“Nothing like this has ever happened out there, so it's on our hearts to help them and get them the supplies they need,” Shortt said. “Anybody around us that feels it in their heart to help, please come and donate.”

'Free, fair, secure and accessible': U.S. Attorney for Middle District of Tennessee speaks on elections
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — The U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee addressed Tennessee's voters in a video message on Friday, stressing the importance of free and fair elections.
Henry Leventis explained the role that the Department of Justice (DOJ) plays on election day, including limiting foreign interference in elections and preventing voter suppression.
"Free, fair, secure and accessible elections are the foundation of our democracy," Leventis said.
"Voting is the cornerstone of our democracy," Leventis said. "We work to make sure that everyone who is entitled to vote gets to vote and those who seek to corrupt the election process are brought to justice."
Leventis gave viewers some steps to take on election day:
- "Make a plan: know when, where and how you will vote."
- "Seek out election information from trustworthy sources."
- "Report any potential election crimes to the FBI."
"If someone is in imminent danger or at risk of harm, contact 911 or your local police immediately," Leventis added. "If you think you or someone else's voting rights have been violated, report that to the Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division. If you're not sure whether something is a crime, report it to both the FBI and the Civil Rights Division."

2 men in Halloween masks arrested after break-in at Murfreesboro comic store
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WKRN) — Two men wearing Halloween masks were arrested this week after reportedly breaking into a Murfreesboro comic bookstore and stealing thousands of dollars' worth of collectible game cards.
The alleged break-in happened on the night of Tuesday, Sept. 24, at Grand Adventures Comic and Games on Memorial Boulevard, according to the Murfreesboro Police Department.
Authorities said two men, identified as 42-year-old Phillip Clodfelter and 64-year-old Kelly Garner, smashed the glass of the business's front door to get inside. They then stole an estimated $8,000 worth of Magic: The Gathering cards.
However, police said the two masked men didn't stop there. Clodfelter and Garner reportedly tried to break into Grand Slam Collectibles on Northwest Broad Street the same night but failed to get inside.

Surveillance footage from the business showed the two suspects wearing distinctive masks. According to Murfreesboro police, one resembled Michael Myers and the other a nun from the 2010 thriller, "The Town."
Investigators said the video also identified their getaway car, a red Honda. After issuing a BOLO for the vehicle, Smyrna police reportedly spotted the Honda driving erratically and made a traffic stop.
Officers said they immediately recognized the masks and stolen collectible game cards, which were sitting in plain sight inside the car. Following further interviews with Murfreesboro detectives, the two men were arrested and charged with burglary, theft and vandalism.
Garner and Clodfelter are also suspected of committing similar burglaries at comic stores in Brentwood and Nashville, detectives said. As of Friday, Sept. 27, both were being held at the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center on $48,000 bonds.

Lawsuit against Tullahoma High School social media policy drops former principal from complaint
TULLAHOMA, Tenn. (WKRN) — One current and one former member of the Tullahoma High School administrative team have been dropped from a First Amendment lawsuit against the school system.
Last summer a student at Tullahoma High School sued the school system for violating his constitutional rights when he was suspended for three days over internet memes shared on social media in 2022. The suit was filed by the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), a nonprofit organization built to defend and sustain individual rights to free speech in the US, on behalf of the student, who was a minor when the incident occurred.
A month after the suit was filed, Tullahoma High School removed the student's suspension from his record and altered its social media policy, according to FIRE officials.
Over a year later, the case is still making its way through the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee, but two of the defendants have been dropped from the case through a court order. Former THS Principal Jason Quick and current THS Assistant Principal Derrick Crutchfield are no longer parties to the suit.
According to Judge Katherine Crytzer, both Crutchfield and Quick are immune from liability under previous precedent in case law. The doctrine of "qualified immunity" covers government officials acting in their official capacity, the Court said.
Because both administrators were acting in their official capacity as school administrators, they are entitled to qualified immunity, the judge said in her ruling.
Of the nine separate claims made in FIRE's initial complaint against the school system and the two administrators, only one claim remains, per the ruling. Claim four is against Tullahoma City Schools, arguing the school system violated the student's constitutional right to free speech.
The student has since graduated from Tullahoma High School and has entered college, according to the ruling.
News 2 has reached out to FIRE for comment on the ruling.

Former THP trooper facing rape, misconduct charges
SEQUATCHIE COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) – A former Tennessee state trooper has been indicted and arrested as the result of a case handled by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI), officials announced Wednesday.
At the request of 12th Judicial District Attorney General Courtney Lynch, the TBI said its special agents started investigating a complaint on April 22 about a trooper having "frequent contact with an individual involved in prostitution," who had warrants from multiple jurisdictions.
Over the course of the investigation, authorities said they learned Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) Trooper Brenton Wiegand was involved with the woman while in his state vehicle and in uniform from September 2023 through April 2024.
Then, on Monday, Sept. 23, the Sequatchie County Grand Jury returned an indictment charging 38-year-old Wiegand with one count of aggravated rape and one count of official misconduct, according to the TBI. He was arrested the following day and booked into the Sequatchie County Jail.
Officials said the bond for Wiegand -- who is no longer employed by THP -- will be set on Monday, Sept. 30.
No additional details have been released about this investigation.

2 arrested for fight at middle school football game
WILSON COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — Two Hartsville residents were arrested following a "disturbance" at a middle school football game.
According to the Wilson County Sheriff's Office (WCSO), James Brewer, 34, and Jessi Harris, 34, were taken into custody after a physical altercation at the end of the game between Winfree Bryant Middle School and Satterfield Middle School on Sept. 17.
The incident reportedly began as a verbal dispute but escalated into a physical confrontation, according to WCSO.
Deputies arrested Brewer for disorderly conduct and assault. Harris, Brewer's partner, was charged with public intoxication, disorderly conduct, and assault. Both were transported to the Wilson County Correctional Facility, where they were booked and later released on bond.
According to WCSO, it took them, school resource officers, and officers with the Lebanon Police Department to assist with crowd control at the incident. The on-scene investigation identified Brewer and Harris as the primary aggressors.
"The Wilson County Sheriff's Office takes incidents of this nature seriously," the department said in a release. "Threatening or violent behavior, especially at family-oriented events such as school games, will not be tolerated. We encourage all attendees to conduct themselves with respect and consideration for others. Former bailiff accused of sexually assaulting inmates while transporting them to Middle TN facility
MARION COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — A TBI investigation has led to the arrest of a former Marion County court officer who is accused of sexually assaulting female inmates while transporting them to a facility in Middle Tennessee.
Officials said special agents with the TBI began investigating complaints involving 83-year-old Marshall Raines in August of 2023. During the course of investigation, Raines was reportedly employed as a part-time bailiff and court officer in Marion County.
The investigation revealed that Raines sexually assaulted at least three female inmates on multiple occasions between Sept. 2022 and March 2023. According to the TBI, the incidents occurred while Raines was taking the inmates from Marion County to a facility in Lebanon.
On Monday, Sept. 9, Raines turned himself in at the Marion County Sheriff's Department on an outstanding warrant, charging him with sexual battery and sexual contact with inmates. Authorities reported he was later released on bond.
Following his release, he was then taken to the Smith County Jail due to an indictment that was returned back on Aug. 5, charging him with sexual battery, sexual contact with an inmate, official misconduct, and official oppressions. The TBI said he was booked on a $20,000 bond for the charges.
In addition, the Van Buren County Grand Jury also returned an indictment against Raines on Sept. 9, charging him with two counts each of sexual battery, sexual contact with an inmate, official misconduct and official oppression.
Officials said he was booked at Van Buren County Jail for those charges, where his bond was set at $80,000.
The TBI said Raines is no longer employed by the Marion County Sherriff's Department.

Music City Center to study need for expansion
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) -- Music City Center, a 2.1-million-square-foot convention and event facility in the heart of downtown Nashville, is considering expanding.
"We're turning away so much business that we can't accommodate right now and we've got shows that are frankly outgrowing us," said Music City Center President and CEO Charles Starks.
On Thursday, Sept. 5, the Convention Center Authority approved a $75,000 bid to complete a feasibility study on the need for expansion.
Starks said they want to stay competitive, retain business, and say yes to new opportunities they know are coming as the city continues to grow.
According to Starks, an expansion could mean adding more levels to the center or buying surrounding land and building out. He said they'd also consider adding a campus within walking distance of the Music City Center.
"It's a long journey, but the first phase is you've got to be able to say and show people that indeed we have lost enough business, there is enough demand that it warrants further expanding the building," said Starks.
| READ MORE | Latest headlines from Nashville and Davidson County
The feasibility study will be complete in about a year and is funded through the Convention Center Authority's operating budget.

Man admits to breaking into neighbor's apartment in Putnam County, deputies say
PUTNAM COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — Deputies in Putnam County have arrested a man who admitted to breaking into his next door neighbor's apartment.
The Putnam County Sheriff's Office said deputies began investigating the incident on Thursday, Aug. 29, after a woman reported someone had broken into her apartment located in the 1700 block of South Jefferson Avenue.
According to officials, the woman entered through the front door of her unit, heard the back door slam, and then a loud noise come front her back porch.
She reportedly told investigators that she looked around and inspected her apartment, but no items were missing. However, she said it appeared that someone had rummaged through a drawer in the dresser.
During the investigation, detectives observed that the victim's apartment directly joined the neighboring one. While inspecting the back porch, detectives said they discovered that the porch is more than 10 feet off ground, meaning the only way to get into victim's apartment would be from the apartment next door.
The resident of the neighboring apartment — identified as Casey McCully — invited detectives into his apartment and allowed them to view his back porch area, authorities said. McCully later admitted to detectives that he "gained access to the woman's apartment from her back porch area and entered her residence."
McCully was charged with aggravated burglary. He remains jailed on $45,000 bond and is expected to appear in court on Oct. 7.
No additional information was released.

The officers aided two victims, only identified as a 47-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman.
The woman claimed that she and the male victim were trying to leave a parking lot in a Nissan Altima when she drove near a group of people. People in the group began yelling at her, and several women approached her car and began striking her through the window of the Altima.
The male victim got out of the car and began firing shots into the air in an attempt to end the conflict.
The female driver then reportedly heard someone else firing a gun in response to the male victim's shots. The 47-year-old was shot multiple times, and the 44-year-old was shot in the shoulder.
Witnesses identified the suspect's vehicle, a gray Infiniti, at which point one officer was able to stand in front of it and order the driver to stop. The suspect, Jeremi Ford, 39, continued to travel towards the officer, police said.
The release stated that the officer moved out of the way and Ford pulled into a parking lot. The suspect and three women who were in the car with him were arrested.
Ford was identified as the shooter but refused to be interviewed by police. Police said he has prior felony drug convictions and is now facing multiple charges as a result of the shooting. He is being held in Metro Jail on a $560,000 bond.
Both victims were transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center for their injuries and are expected to recover.
